Sylvia Simpson, Watercolour Artist

Sylvia Simpson's watercolour paintings are vibrant, colourful scenes of city streets, landscapes and florals. Sylvia's first love is painting on location where she can capture every quality of her subject: the light, smell, taste, sound and spirit of each scene. With colours more intense and of greater depth than usually found in the watercolour genre, Sylvia's paintings are full of life and abound with detail.

Born in Hamilton, her passion for art was evident at a young age, but she did not study art formally until her late twenties. Education and a career came first. Then in 1980, her interest in studying art returned. As Sylvia became a devoted student of painting at the Dundas Valley School of Art, Mohawk College and the La Cloche School of Art. She began exhibiting her work in juried shows during the 1980's, and now has a substantial history of shows and exhibits in her portfolio. She has a dedicated following of art lovers who encourage her in her work. Sylvia now teaches watercolour painting at Mohawk College and at the Bala Guild of Fine Art. She is a founding mother of the Hamilton Southwest Artists Studio Tour, now in its 5th successful year.

Ms. Simpson's paintings have been shown at the Art Gallery of Hamilton, the Glenhyrst Gallery of Brant, the Tom Thomson Gallery, the Dofasco Gallery-Dundas Valley School of Art, the Museum of Steam and Technology, the La Cloche Juried Art Show as well as One of a Kind and the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibit. Her painting "Mountain View over Corktown" won the Dr. Allan Pollock Award
at the 2003 Juried Show at the Tom Thomson Memorial Art Gallery in Owen Sound, Ontario. She was the featured artist at the Main Street Gallery in Hamilton for the month of April 2004, and exhibits her work throughout the year at her "Gallery on Chedoke" in Hamilton, Ontario (905-528-9350). Sylvia's work is available as originals and prints, as well as collections of note cards. She is also experimenting with applying her images to such things as tote bags and fashions.
